JELIC is an international enrichment programme for ages 3 to 7, with centres in Taiwan, USA, Canada, Singapore, China and Malaysia. Designed by a team of educators, child psychologists, physicists and mathematicians, the JELIC curriculum balances the development of both hemispheres of the brain, through self-paced hands-on experiences. How does a Jelic child learn?
Well-planned Class Procedure
In line with the spirit of PSL (Personalized System of Learning), children attempt to work on the challenge exercise on their own. Teachers observe the students closely but guidance is given only upon request. No direct answer is given. Teacher will raise questions and give clues as a guide to solve the exercise. Students solve the problem themselves. This effectively develops student’s self-confidence.

How brain development works:
And as you spend time with your baby – talking, playing with him, and drawing his attention to the many things in his environment, basically providing lots of stimulation, his neural network becomes denser, and he is able to process information at a faster rate and hence absorb new skills quicker.
In a sense, he becomes smarter.
Even before your child is born, all the nerve cells he will ever possess have been formed. These nerve cells are like a mass of unconnected electrical wires. From the time your child is born, his brain will constantly strive to connect the wires.
But what makes the wires connect and what does the connection mean to a growing child? Every time a child is held, read to, or plays with a toy, these nerves make a connection.
During the early years of life, these wires are connecting at an amazing pace, and once-in-a-lifetime windows of opportunity are opening to learn tasks in a stimulated environment.
What is Brain Power?
Research has found that mice or rats raised in enriched environments, with toys and playmates have billions more connections between brain cells and are better learners than mice and rats raised alone in empty cages.

The human brain works best when both the right and the left hemispheres are well developed. The left hemisphere is generally more emphasized than the right hemisphere, so to remedy this imbalance, JELIC was developed. It is a complete curriculum based solely on hands-on experiences incorporating many different kinds of manipulation and stimulation. This helps to enhance a child’s capabilities for procedural and creative thinking. The exercises employed help balance the development of both hemisphere of the pre-school to kindergarten aged brain.

Content of the Programme:
Every little step of the JELIC learning program is carefully designed and well integrated into a complete curriculum of hands-on exercises for students aged 3 to 6 years old.
- 450 toolboxes for manipulation, exploration and thinking
- 59 well-sequenced topics under 6 learning modules/domains (refer to table)
- 7 levels of difficulty
- Level 1 = 36 boxes
- Level 2 = 44 boxes
- Level 3 = 64 boxes
- Level 4 = 76 boxes
- Level 5 = 76 boxes
- Level 6 = 76 boxes
- Level 7 = 78 boxes
By going through the exercises in the workbook and the manipulative tools in the boxes students learn how to solve problems independently. The 450 boxes contain approximately 3,000 questions and it takes around 3 years for a child to complete the programme if the child starts at three years old. Student also learns about order and responsibility by following the class guidelines, from taking out the boxes to returning the boxes to the JELIC shelf.
